Ben Garner recently preached on 1 Peter 2:11–20. The middle section of this concerned a Christian's response to government. Because of Ben's work in state government and the numerous insights he made on his topic, we decided to take offer that part of his sermon as a blog entry. While there are a host of Bible verses that connect personal vocation to the gospel—a personal favorite is the simple connection between one’s hard work and the glory of God in 1 Cor 10:31—for many of us there is a practical “disconnect” between the daily grind of our responsibilities and the gospel we sing about on Sunday. In a way, who can blame us?  How does this next sales call…this next line of code…or even this next diaper have any relevance to the gospel of grace?

Continuing our discussion of biblical convictions regarding work, unemployment, and even under-employment, here are convictions 6-8 with a ninth point added about temptations for the unemployed.

The Masculine Mandate: God’s Calling to Men (2010), is an excellent combination of illustrations, biblical reflection, and insight about what God asks of men. We are to work the gardens where God has put us to labor – cultivating, nurturing, building up, and leading – in our parenting, marriage, workplace, church, and friendships.
