Doctors have recently coined a phrase that until very recently did not exist: gender dysphoria. There is still controversy in the medical community about the idea, but it means that a person experiences a significant amount of "distress" connected to a feeling that a person's physical gender is not their true gender. There is much that could be said about this medical condition, but there is a spiritual condition that we could also label "gender dysphoria." We, too, can experience a level of "distress" that comes from living out our Christian manhood and womanhood.

Tomorrow, Thursday, January 12th, many of us will be praying and fasting for Gideon Ruhl, Brody McCarty, and others in need of a particular demonstration of the power of God. Below is a set of Scriptures and prayer needs to guide you in seeking the Lord as you do that. If you would like to join others praying, the church lobby will be open from 7-8am and 12-1pm.

We are canceling our service for Sunday, January 8th, but below is an outline for a time of family worship (or roommate worship or by yourself) if you would like to still hear from God's word and worship him on the Lord's Day.

Several couples from SGC attended and several of our young men and women served at Hand of Hope's eleventh annual fundraising banquet on November 17. Hand of Hope's director, Tonya Nelson, shared an update on Hand of Hope's ministry and needs. In the past eleven years, God has blessed Hand of Hope with almost 25,000 client appointments, 1412 babies born. That represents 187 over this past year, along with 43 conversions.

A few years ago we started talking about "every-member ministry," the idea that our church has a few elders but hundreds of ministers. This comes from the Bible in Ephesians 4:11-12:

Mark Prater posted on the SG website the need for prayer as Hurricane Matthew makes its way to us. In particular he mentioned Cedric Moss, one of our SG pastors whose church is in Nassau in the Bahamas. Cedric told Mark that “Matthew is a most unusual hurricane. With other hurricanes, we’ve had a mixture of hurricane and tropical storm impact, but when you look at the forecast map, the entire Bahamas is in the red, meaning hurricane force winds. And Matthew is a Major Hurricane, with winds exceeding 110 mph.”

Cedric's prayer requests include:

Sunday we looked at the shocking act of service Jesus did when he washed the feet of the disciples. We considered the marvel of God in Christ stooping to wash the dirty feet of creatures he had made, the humility of Jesus cleaning and drying the feet of Judas Iscariot, the one who would betray him.... And at the end we read through a set of questions to help us evaluate our own service of others.
