Martin Luther gives us the biblical answer to the question, "When will I be perfect?" He says, not yet:
This life, therefore,
Is not righteousness but growth in righteousness,
Not health but healing,
Not being but becoming,
Not rest but exercise.
We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it.
The process is not yet finished, but it is going on.
This is not the end but it is the road.
All does not yet gleam but all is being purified.**
Of course, the fact this life is not about perfection DOES NOT mean that we won't one day be perfect:
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Phil. 1:6
When the Bible is "sure" of something, we must stand on the truth of it. We may not be perfect now, but one day all traces of sin and temptation will be erased from our lives. For now, however, "all does not yet gleam, but all is being purified."
**I read the quote in one of David Powlison's writings.
