Scriptures Relating to the Fear of the Lord

  1. Deut. 6:1-2 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.”
  2. Deut. 8:6 “So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.”
  3. Deut. 10:12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul…”
  4. Deut. 17:19 “And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them.”
  5. Deut. 31:12-13 “Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, 13 and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”
  6. Psalms 19:9 “the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever.”
  7. Psalms 25:14 “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.”
  8. Psalms 33:18 “Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love.”
  9. Psalm 103:17 “But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children.”
  10. Psalms 111:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!”
  11. Psalms 128:1 “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways!”
  12. Eccl. 12:13 “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”
  13. Isaiah 11:2-3a “And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.”
  14. Isaiah 33:5-6 “The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness, 6 and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge the fear of the Lord is Zion's treasure.”
  15. Hosea 3:5 “Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.”
  16. Acts 9:31 “So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.”
  17. 2 Cor. 5:11 “Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others.”
  18. 2 Cor. 7:1 “Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.”
  19. Col. 3:22 “Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters,[f] not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.”

Proverbs on the Fear of the Lord

  • Prov. 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
  • Proverbs 1:29-31 “Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, 30 would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, 31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices.”
  • Prov. 2:3-5 “Yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”
  • Prov. 8:13a “The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.”
  • Prov. 10:27 “The fear of the Lord prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short.”
  • Prov. 14:26 “In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge.”
  • Prov. 14:27 “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.”
  • Prov. 15:16 “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it.”
  • Prov. 15:33 “The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.”
  • Prov. 19:23 “The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.”
  • Prov. 22:4 “The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.”    
  • Prov. 23:17 “Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day.”
