What Does God’s Word Say About Abortion?

April 8, 2026

Teacher: Jordan Liggitt
Scripture: Ex 20:13

Possible Foundations

  • What feels right / nice / kind?
  • What makes sense to me?
  • What could I convince you to believe?
  • What could I convince a majority to believe?
  • What does God say?

Foundation of God’s Word

Humans are created by God in His image

Genesis 1:26–27 (ESV) — Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

As creator, God has complete authority

Romans 9:20 (ESV) — But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?”

God is the give of life

Genesis 2:7 (ESV) — then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

God forbids murder

Exodus 20:13 (ESV) — “You shall not murder.

God gives children

Genesis 30:22 (ESV) — Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.

Children are a blessing

Psalm 127:3 (ESV) — Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.

God forbids child sacrifice

Leviticus 20:1–2 (ESV) — The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Say to the people of Israel, Any one of the people of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones.

God treats unborn children as people

Psalm 139:13 (ESV) — For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.

Jeremiah 1:5 (ESV) — “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Exodus 21:22–23 (ESV) — “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life,

Sickness and death affect everyone since the Fall

Romans 5:12 (ESV) — Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

Parents’ sin can directly impact children

Exodus 34:7 (ESV) — … visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

2 Samuel 12:14 (ESV) — Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child who is born to you shall die.”

How are we to live in a sinful world?

Romans 12:9 (ESV) — Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Romans 12:17 (ESV) — Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

Romans 12:21 (ESV) — Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Opposing abortion

Use biblical terms

  • murder
  • child sacrifice

Romans 2:15 (ESV) — They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them

Abortion is not less than sin; it requires repentance.

Abortion is not more than sin; Christ can atone.

Avoid limiting the discussion to secular terms

These arguments may be true, but are not as powerful as God’s word.

  • “abortion stops a beating heart”
  • brain activity / consciousness
  • ability to feel pain
  • observable behavior
  • negative social impacts
  • physical and psychological risks

Answering hard questions, smoke screens, and lies

When does life and personhood begin? (conception, “quickening,” “viability,” birth?)

“Aren’t miscarriages and abortion the same?”

“My body, my choice.”

“The baby’s life isn’t worth living.”

“Abortion is justified if the pregnancy was the result of sin against the mother.”

“Abortion is justified to save the life of the mother.” / “Abortion is healthcare.”

Discussion Questions

  1. What foundation do you tend to look to first when answering hard questions?
  2. How do you tend to react when God’s word does not match how you feel? Did that happen with any of the topics tonight?
  3. Are you confident in speaking God’s truth in love to others when it is hard for them to hear?
  4. How does seeing all people as image-bearers change how you think and act?
