Today's Old Testament class focused on Proverbs. We explored the authorship (Solomon) and historical setting (during the monarchy) of the book, its structure, and key themes. Especially important is the idea of "the fear of the LORD" as "the beginning of wisdom" (Prov 9:10). Proverbs is not just good advice for skillful living but the picture of a person who fears the LORD. Finally, it is Jesus who is "something greater than Solomon" and the one in whom are hidden "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Matt 12:42; Col 2:3).
