“Better than…silver…better than gold.”
We spend a lot of time seeking some version of “silver” and “gold,” but there’s something “better.” Proverbs tells us that something better is wisdom. Silver and gold can buy cars and houses but not happiness. They can buy wedding rings but not a happy marriage. They can buy vacation homes but not peace. We need wisdom.
This Sunday we take a take a break from our Isaiah series and begin a six-week series from the book of Proverbs. We’ll hit three topics that directly or indirectly affect us all: marriage, parenting, and vocation (work). Notice, that’s not “vacation,” even though it’s June! “Vocation” means your “calling” and is another way of talking about our work lives. We’ll get back to Isaiah in June and finish that series right at the beginning of August, Lord willing.
But wait, you say, “I’m an unmarried college student with no job!” No worries. All of God’s Word is relevant for all of God’s people all the time. We’ll make sure that as we bring out the key points on these issues we hit everyone hearing these messages.
If you can, read some or all of Proverbs 1–9 before Sunday. Those chapters are the foundation of all that is said throughout Proverbs. If that’s not feasible, shoot for chapters 1–3.
This might be a good chance to invite a friend or neighbor to SGC. Each of these sermons will be a stand-alone word so you don’t have to hear the whole series to benefit. Proverbs are nuggets of wisdom from the Lord for the challenges that everyone faces every day. Consider who might need to hear these sermons. Here’s the schedule:
May 6 – Marriage 1 (Daniel Baker)
May 13 – Marriage 2 (Daniel Baker)
May 20 – Parenting 1 (Mike Noel)
May 27 – Parenting 2 (Phil Sasser)
June 3 – Vocation (Work) 1 (Daniel Baker)
June 10 – Vocation (Work) 2 (Daniel Baker)
May God use this sermon in a hundred ways in your life and the lives of those around you!
Blessed is the one who finds wisdom,
and the one who gets understanding,
14 for the gain from her is better than gain from silver
and her profit better than gold.
15 She is more precious than jewels,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.
–Prov 3:13-15
