Phil's sermon on Sunday helped us all to understand our anxious hearts a little better. It was the first of a four-week series on the subject. Listen to the whole thing to get the complete picture, but here is a list of five truths he shared about anxiety:
- Anxiety is always about tomorrow, not today, but God promises grace for today.
- Anxiety is fueled by undisciplined imaginations, but God calls us to think on whatever is praiseworthy (Phil. 4:8).
- Anxiety is often irrational. We fear things so unlikely to happen as to be preposterous.
- Anxiety turns us into false prophets. We dread and predict things that (almost) never materialize.
- Anxiety is fueled by unbelief in God and his promises. It can often be a blatant mistrust of God and his Word.
The antidote for anxiety comes from 1 Peter 5:6-7: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you." Our God cares for us, so instead of being anxious, cast all of those anxieties on him.
